The Line We Leave Behind

Go to any river and look up. Chances are you’ll see fishing line hanging from the branches like some kind of ugly Christmas tree. Walk along the bank. You’ll find it tangled in the rocks, wrapped around stumps, drifting in the current.

It doesn’t break down. Monofilament fishing line can persist in the environment for over 600 years. And while it sits there, it does damage. Birds get tangled in it. Turtles get wrapped in it. Fish, seals, and other wildlife suffer from something most of us never meant to leave behind.

Most anglers don’t leave line on purpose. You get snagged in a tree and break it off because you can’t reach it. You change a leader and the old one slips out of your pocket. You strip line while fly fishing and it drifts downstream before you even notice. One piece becomes thousands. And that’s how rivers start to look like they’re decorated with the wrong kind of tinsel.
